My inspiration...

Picture
Living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest just North of Seattle, my daily inspiration comes from the amazing scenery of mountains and volcanoes that surround this area. My work is primarily functional, wheel-thrown Raku for the home and garden, though I also dabble with electric fired stoneware pieces when the weather is not cooperating for me to be able to Raku. I was bitten by the Raku bug years ago, though I was disenchanted with the finished pieces; vases etc, sitting on a self collecting dust. Determined to play with fire and smoke and figure out a way to make Raku functional, I created a line of Raku bird feeders and bird houses that are both art and function!  I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it!

Raku

Picture
a process by which pottery is fired quickly using fossil fuel (propane) and then moved while glowing hot to a closed container with combustible materials (as paper or sawdust) that ignite and cause a reaction creating colors and patterns in the pottery's surface. Any unglazed areas turn black due to the carbon given off from the reduction of oxygen. The clay is moved from the kiln to a container (usually a trashcan of some sort) which contains combustible organic materials like, leaves, sawdust, or paper. Once the lid of the container is closed the reduction oxidation process begins. The temperature change from the kiln to the container is where the combustible material is and where the magic of raku happens!

I can also do custom items. Just send me an idea of what you are looking for and I will be happy to give you a quote and create something special for you!
